Phonics in Nursery

Posted by

This term in Nursery we have begun a slow and steady introduction to letters and the sounds that they make. We have done lots of work over the last term on orally segmenting (breaking up) and blending (pushing back together) words to help us with our reading and writing skills and lots of us are now ready to start to learn to recognise the letters and their phonemes (sounds they make). We are aiming to explore a letter each week (with a topical focus i.e ‘s’ last week due to seeds and growing focus) with a variety of songs, games and activities. We launched this a few weeks ago by creating a real life alphablock costume whose letter we can change each week – the children love CBeebies alphablocks show and using this at home can be a great way to get children engaged in early phonics. Take a look at our very own nursery alphablocks and the alphabet line we have started to create outside! http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/shows/alphablocks
